Antique Prints add the finishing touch to a contemporary or traditional setting..

Before the widespread use of photography - paintings, drawings, and prints were the only way to display and share images of people, places and things. Prints show us how people looked and lived, and they also provide a visual record of collectable museum quality objects, such as rare bookbindings, fine painted porcelain, and archaeological artefacts such as pottery or Saxon jewelery. Victorian botanical and fauna illustrations have given us prints of ferns, roses, wildflowers, exotic birds, butterflies, many equisitely hand-coloured or printed from detailed carved woodblocks. Any of these themes add interest to the back-drop of contemporary or traditional furnishings.

Antique Prints are FINE ART limited editions..

In many cases the number of prints produced are known and if the print was originally created for a book, the number would range between several hundred to a few thousand. The total number of prints available today may only number in a few to dozens. When you buy an antique print you many have a unique view of a historic building that is no longer standing. You may infact have one of only a few remaining images! Antique prints become more rare and desireable in collections as time goes by.

Antique Prints are historical documents and collectable pieces of art!

The print above shows a hand-tooled, painted bookbinding from the 15th century. The book's cover was reproduced by the lithographer to the Queen in the late 1800's, part of a study of the art of English book bindings over the centuries. One can appreciate not only the fine workmanship of hand-made books in the middle ages but the craftsmanship of late Victorian chromolithography with its rich colours and fine detail. Only 500 copies were published and many of the large folio volumes reside in museums, libraries and private colletions. Wessex Prints is pleased to offer these original prints for sale. Please browse our store category Fine Bookbindings to see the collection.
